Emerging Trends

Code 083, Class 11. New technologies are changing daily life. Here we meet the biggest emerging trends in computing and see where each one is used.

Fast changing field

What this chapter is about

Computing is moving fast. In this chapter we look at artificial intelligence, machine learning, the internet of things, cloud computing and a few more trends, and see real uses of each.

1. Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is making machines do tasks that usually need human intelligence, such as understanding speech or recognising a face. Machine Learning (ML) is a part of AI where the machine learns patterns from data instead of being told every rule.

Everyday AI: voice assistants, spam filters, and shopping recommendations that learn what you like.

2. The Internet of Things (IoT)

IoT connects everyday devices to the internet so they can share data and be controlled remotely, such as smart lights, fitness bands and smart home appliances.

3. Cloud computing

Cloud computing means using computers and storage over the internet instead of only your own machine. Files saved online and apps that run in a browser are examples.

4. Other trends

Big data studies very large sets of data. Blockchain keeps secure shared records. Virtual and augmented reality create or add to what we see. Robotics builds machines that do physical tasks.

Practise with the interactive

Match each technology to a real-life use by tapping. The interactive opens right here in the lesson.

Practice set A, multiple choice

1. AI stands for …

Artificial Intelligence, making machines do tasks that usually need human intelligence.

2. A smart watch that sends your data to a phone is an example of …

the Internet of Things (IoT).

3. Saving your files online to use from any device is …

cloud computing.

4. A part of AI where the machine learns from data is called …

Machine Learning (ML).

Practice set B, short answer

1. Define the Internet of Things and give one example.

IoT connects everyday devices to the internet to share data, for example a smart light controlled from a phone.

2. State one use of machine learning.

Recommending videos or products, filtering spam, or recognising faces. [any one]

3. What is cloud computing?

Using computing power and storage over the internet rather than only on your own machine.

Quick summary

AI makes machines act intelligently, and machine learning lets them learn from data. IoT connects everyday devices to the internet. Cloud computing provides storage and apps over the internet. Other trends include big data, blockchain, virtual and augmented reality, and robotics.

Open the Virtual Lab

These free Class 11 Computer Science notes explain emerging trends, artificial intelligence, machine learning, the internet of things, cloud computing, big data, blockchain and robotics, with clear examples and practice, for CBSE students across India and the Gulf including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait and Bahrain.
