Computer Networks

What this chapter is about
A computer network is a group of computers joined to share data and resources. Networks come in different sizes and shapes and use special devices to connect.
1. Types of network
A LAN (Local Area Network) covers a small area like a school. A MAN (Metropolitan Area Network) covers a city. A WAN (Wide Area Network) covers a large area; the internet is the biggest WAN.
2. Topologies and devices
A topology is the shape of a network: bus, star, ring or mesh. Common devices are the hub and switch (join computers in a network), the router (joins networks), and the modem (connects to the internet).
3. Addresses and protocols
Every device on a network has an IP address, a unique number. A protocol is a set of rules for communication, such as HTTP for web pages and FTP for file transfer.
