What this unit is about
AI uses maths to make sense of data. Two useful areas are statistics (describing data) and probability (measuring chance).
1. Statistics
Simple statistics describe data: the mean (average), the median (middle value), the mode (most common) and the range (lowest to highest).

For 2, 4, 6: mean = (2 + 4 + 6) / 3 = 4 |
2. Probability
Probability is the chance of something happening, from 0 (never) to 1 (certain). For a fair coin, the probability of heads is 1/2. AI uses probability to make predictions.
3. Why maths matters in AI
AI models use statistics to describe data and probability to decide how sure they are. Understanding these helps you read what an AI model is doing.
