What this chapter is about
Using the internet leaves a trail and carries risks. This chapter covers digital footprints, good netiquette, protecting work, cyber crime and e-waste.
1. Digital footprint and netiquette
A digital footprint is the trail of data you leave online. Netiquette is polite, respectful behaviour online.
2. Protecting work: IPR and FOSS
Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) protect a creator’s work through copyright, patent and trademark. Plagiarism is copying work as your own. Free and open source software (FOSS) may be freely used and shared under its licence.
3. Cyber crime, law and e-waste
Cyber crime includes hacking, phishing and cyber bullying. The IT Act is the law that deals with it. Stay safe with strong passwords and care. Old devices are e-waste and must be recycled safely.
