Introduction to Artificial Intelligence
Code 417, Class 10. AI is machines that act smartly. Here we learn what AI is, how it relates to machine learning, and its domains.

What this unit is about
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is making machines do tasks that usually need human intelligence. A machine using stored rules only is not AI; a machine that learns and improves from data is AI.
1. AI, ML and DL
Machine Learning (ML) is a part of AI where the machine learns from data. Deep Learning (DL) is a part of ML that uses neural networks with many layers. So DL is inside ML, which is inside AI.
2. The three domains
AI works in three domains: Data (learning from numbers), Computer Vision (understanding images), and Natural Language Processing (understanding text and speech).
3. Applications and ethics
AI is used in healthcare, banking, shopping and transport. It must be used fairly: bias from unfair data should be avoided, and privacy protected.
