Electronic Spreadsheet (Advanced)

Code 402, Class 10. A spreadsheet can decide, count and summarise. Here we use IF, COUNTIF and SUMIF, cell references, and tools to sort, filter and automate.

What this chapter is about

Advanced spreadsheets do more than add up. We use functions that decide and count, control how references change, and tools to sort, filter and automate.

1. Advanced functions

IF gives one answer or another based on a condition. COUNTIF counts cells that meet a condition, and SUMIF adds them.

=IF(C2>=33, “Pass”, “Fail”) (shows Pass if the mark in C2 is 33 or more, else Fail)

2. Relative and absolute references

A relative reference (A1) changes when the formula is copied. An absolute reference ($A$1) stays fixed. Use $ to lock a cell that should not change.

3. Sort, filter, charts and macros

Sort arranges data, a filter shows only the rows you want, a chart pictures the data, and a macro records a set of steps so you can repeat them with one click.

Practise with the interactive

Explore the idea by tapping. The interactive opens right here in the lesson.

Practice set A, multiple choice

1. Which function gives a Pass or Fail based on a condition?

IF.

2. Which counts cells that meet a condition?

COUNTIF.

3. What does $A$1 mean?

An absolute reference that stays fixed when copied.

4. A recorded set of steps repeated with one click is a …

macro.

Practice set B, short answer

1. What does the IF function do?

It gives one result or another depending on a condition.

2. What is the difference between a relative and an absolute reference?

A relative reference changes when copied; an absolute reference ($A$1) stays fixed.

3. What does a filter do?

It shows only the rows that match a chosen condition.

Quick summary

Advanced spreadsheet functions decide and count: IF gives one answer or another, COUNTIF counts cells that meet a condition and SUMIF adds them. A relative reference (A1) changes when copied; an absolute reference ($A$1) stays fixed. Sort arranges data, a filter shows chosen rows, a chart pictures data, and a macro records steps to repeat with one click.
