What this chapter is about

A workplace must be healthy, safe and secure. This means spotting dangers, working safely and comfortably, and knowing what to do in an emergency.

1. Hazards at the workplace

A hazard is anything that can cause harm. Common ones are physical (a wet floor, falling objects), electrical (loose or damaged wires), fire, and health hazards (poor posture, eye strain). The first step to safety is to identify hazards and remove or report them.

2. Safety and healthy habits

Follow safety rules and signs, keep the area tidy, and use equipment correctly. Work with good ergonomics: sit up straight, keep the screen at eye level, keep feet flat, and take short breaks to rest your eyes and body.

3. First aid and emergencies

First aid is the first help given for a minor injury, using a first aid kit. In an emergency such as a fire, stay calm, raise the alarm, use a fire extinguisher only for a small fire, and leave by the emergency exit. Never use a lift during a fire.

4. Secure working habits

Keep work secure: use strong passwords, take backups of important files, log out when you leave, and do not share personal or company data.
