Data Entry and Keyboarding Skills
Code 402, Class 9. Fast, accurate typing is a key IT skill. Here we learn the keyboard, the home row and touch typing.

What this chapter is about
Keyboarding is typing quickly and correctly. Good typing uses the home row, touch typing (typing without looking) and the right posture.
1. The keyboard and home row
A keyboard has alphanumeric keys (letters and numbers), function keys (F1 to F12), navigation keys (arrows) and a numeric keypad. The home row keys are ASDF for the left hand and JKL; for the right, where the fingers rest.
2. Touch typing
Touch typing means typing without looking at the keys. Each finger has its own keys. A typing tutor is software that gives lessons and measures your progress.
3. Speed, accuracy and posture
Typing speed is measured in words per minute (WPM). Aim for speed with accuracy. Sit straight, keep wrists level and take short breaks to avoid strain.
