What this unit is about
Big data is data so large and fast that ordinary tools cannot handle it. Data analytics studies data to find useful patterns and meaning.
1. The three Vs of big data
Big data is described by three Vs: Volume (how much), Velocity (how fast it arrives) and Variety (many types, such as text, images and numbers).
2. Types of analytics
Descriptive analytics says what happened, predictive analytics says what may happen next, and prescriptive analytics suggests what to do.
3. Where big data is used
Big data is used by shopping sites (recommendations), banks (fraud), hospitals (health trends) and cities (traffic), to make better decisions.
