What this chapter is about

A sharp knife and a blunt one push with the same force, yet one cuts. That is pressure. In this chapter we learn pressure and air pressure, see how winds form, and how thunderstorms build charges that flash as lightning.

1. Pressure

The same force on a small area gives high pressure, on a large area low pressure

Pressure

pressure is the force acting on each unit of area: pressure = force ÷ area; its SI unit is newton per square metre, called the pascal (Pa)

For the same force, a smaller area gives greater pressure. Liquids and gases also press on the walls of their container, and the air around us presses on everything, which we call atmospheric pressure.

In real life: A sharp knife cuts easily because its thin edge puts the force onto a very small area, giving high pressure.

Worked example 1

Question. A force of 100 N acts on an area of 2 m². Find the pressure.

1 Use pressure = force ÷ area. 100 ÷ 2.
2 Work it out. = 50.

Answer: The pressure is 50 pascals (Pa).

2. Winds, thunderstorms and lightning

Winds and lightning

differences in air pressure make winds blow, as warm air rises and cooler air moves in; in a thundercloud, rising and falling winds rub ice and water, building electric charges that leap as lightning

Lightning can strike buildings and harm life and property. A lightning conductor, a metal rod joined to the earth, safely carries the charge to the ground. The India Meteorological Department watches storms and cyclones and warns people.

In real life: During a storm, standing under a tall tree is dangerous, while a building with a lightning conductor is far safer.

Worked example 2

Question. Why does a sharp needle pierce cloth easily?

1 The needle’s tip has a very small area. so for the same push the pressure is large.
2 High pressure pierces. the cloth gives way.

Answer: Its tiny tip area makes the pressure very high, so it pierces easily.

Worked example 3

Question. How does a lightning conductor protect a building?

1 It is a metal rod on the building joined by wire to the earth. offering an easy path for the charge.
2 Lightning follows this path safely to the ground. instead of through the building.

Answer: It carries the lightning’s charge safely down to the earth, away from the building.

They spread the weight over a larger area, giving lower pressure, so they sink less.
