Divisibility rules

a number is a multiple of another if it divides exactly, leaving no remainder; quick rules save dividing: a number is divisible by 2 if it ends in an even digit, by 5 if it ends in 0 or 5, by 10 if it ends in 0, and by 3 or 9 if the sum of its digits is

For 3 and 9, keep adding the digits until a small number remains, then check that. These rules come from how place value splits a number into tens, hundreds and so on.

In real life: A shopkeeper can share 453 sweets equally among 3 children without dividing, because 4 + 5 + 3 = 12 is a multiple of 3.

Worked example 1

Question. Is 453 divisible by 3?

1 Add the digits. 4 + 5 + 3 = 12.
2 Check the digit sum. 12 is a multiple of 3.

Answer: Yes, 453 is divisible by 3, because its digit sum 12 is.

Worked example 2

Question. In the two-digit number 2A, the whole number is divisible by 5. What can A be?

1 A number is divisible by 5 if it ends in 0 or 5. so the last digit A is 0 or 5.
2 List the choices. A = 0 gives 20, A = 5 gives 25, both divisible by 5.

Answer: A can be 0 or 5.

Worked example 3

Question. Is 1 234 divisible by 9?

1 Add the digits. 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10.
2 Check the digit sum. 10 is not a multiple of 9.

Answer: No, because the digit sum 10 is not divisible by 9.

3. A three-digit number ends in 0. Give two numbers it must divide by.

2, 5 and 10 all divide it, since it ends in 0.
